3 of 50 . view more » aet ceo julian drinkall visits shla on friday 9th march, staff and students at the academy were delighted to welcome the ceo of aet, julian drinkall, to shla. during his visit, julian celebrated the achievements of our students in a special awards ceremony. in addition, he was impressed by the work of our young sports leaders who were busy organising a range of sporting events for younger year groups. julian also witnessed the hard work of our year 11 catering students as they work towards their final exams. commenting on julian's visit, principal, jo trevenna, said, 'we are always keen to show off the great work and commitment of our staff and students. julian was keen to answer any questions the students had about his role and he encouraged them to continue working hard and to aspire to be successful at the academy and beyond.' genocide memorial day and silent soldier unveiling held its annual genocide memorial day, and dedicated its silent soldier statue. this event was attended not just by the school’s own students but also schools across milton keynes, bucks and northants. also attending was local mp iain stewart, mayor of milton keynes cllr martin petchey and beverley perin, chair of governors. sponsored by remembering srebrenica and the holocaust educational trust, speakers included those who have had personal experience of genocide, and their stories explain the effect that it has had on them, their families, and their friends. the most obvious example of genocide in the 20th century was, of course, the holocaust and representing that generation was harry olmer, a holocaust survivor. paul salver, history teacher and organiser of this event commented “the remaining survivors are, of course, now well into their 80s and 90s, and for our current students this may well be the last time that they will hear the very emotional and moving testimony of one of these remarkable individuals and the very powerful message that he expressed.” “sadly, there have been later instances of genocide, such as in rwanda, bosnia and latterly in syria. representing more recent events we had two speakers – lejla damon and professor jon silverman - relating their very personal experiences of the conflict in bosnia." attendance and absences from school we would just like to remind all parents/guardians that the expected attendance for each student is 95% and above. if your child has an attendance of below 90% they are classed as a persistent absence, which would result in fines and legal sanctions having to take place. holidays will not be authorised at shla and could result in a fixed penalty fine if taken within term time. absences for birthdays will not be authorised under any circumstances. general doctors and dentist appointments should be made outside of the school day where necessary, and a whole day off for these appointments will not be authorised. if you need to take your child out of school for an appointment, proof must be shown and your child must be in school before and after the appointment. any hospital or orthodontic appointment letter must be shown to mrs bright, attendance manager, and the whole day of absence will not be authorised unless the appointment is outside of mk, or your child is undergoing some type of procedure. we thank you for your support with your child's attendance at shla. sir herbert leon celebrates best gcse results for 4 years principal's update - is the most improved school in milton keynes i am delighted to report that this year's ks4 results mean that sir herbert leon is the most improved school in milton keynes. whilst the performance tables are still unvalidated until january, the data provides evidence of the huge improvements we are making. our progress 8 score is currently -0.06 which means that we are now an 'average' school. this is hugely significant for us and is a real testament to the hard work of our students and staff. we know that we have a long journey still ahead of us, with improved results in english, maths and science our key focus for this year. however, this data shows that we have already come a long way. here is a link to the government data base for schools: https://www.compare-school-performance.service.gov.uk/school/138439 in addition to our much improved results in the summer for progress 8, i am pleased to share with you the outcomes of our latest ofsted monitoring visit. the ofsted monitoring visit focused on english, maths, science and humanities. the full report is available on our website here - hmi monitoring report - and highlights that 'improvements in teaching over the last year contributed to better outcomes at the end of key stage 4. teaching in the core subjects and humanities is improving.' the report also focuses on the way that we have changed how we teach maths at the academy, led by mrs soper and her team: 'in mathematics, leaders’ introduction of a ‘mastery’ approach is starting to provide pupils with more opportunities to develop their mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.' improvements in the humanities subjects were recognised: 'pupils are typically making better progress than was previously the case in geography and history. increased achievement at the end of key stage 4 in history in 2017 was an early indication of the impact of improving teaching in these subjects.' in addition to these improvements in the curriculum and learning & teaching at shla, the inspectors registered that 'behaviour in lessons is continuing to improve. in most lessons visited during the inspection, pupils arrived punctually and behaved well. pupils understood and followed routines and expectations.' sports minister tracey crouch visits sir herbert leon the house system house identity and ethos at the academy’s house system plays a vital role in helping students feel part of our school community. students will have a feel
